As a casual in an office with a relaxed dress code, I do have some freedom over what I wear...which is a good thing! : )
Today I'm wearing:
- white shirt layered with
- black shift dress
- fishnets
- vintage boots
Alas, I somehow managed to break one of the heel-y bits, so it's off to the shoemakers tomorrow! That's 2 pairs that I've broken! Woe.
I think most people would by now know I'm a big fan of Condoleezza Rice's style. Style, not her foreign policy. Personally, I think she's changed the face of women politicians (the Queen doesn't count, as she's just a figurehead and doesn't make any important decisions). She pretty much made away with the idea that women politicians are dowdy; who can forget Miss Rice in those boots?!
And since we're nearing the end of her term as Secretary of State, and she'd probably be back at Stanford, who'd be my next politico-fashionista(s)?
Right now I'm stalking the style of the Sarkozettes, French women ministers known not only for their intelligence, but their poise and style.
Looks like volume is still on the cards down undahhhhhhhhhhhhh! And I'm finally collating all my bits and pieces together for my little research "test"! But a little break nonetheless...
The Singapore Fashion Festival starts on Friday, and the best friend and I have been trying to get tickets to Ashley Isham, but to no avail... boo! Maybe because we're planning to buy the cheapest tickets available, and I'm sure there aren't a great many of "Show Only" tickets... plus, it's strange that you could only get them online...with a credit card. Oh, why don't they think of us non-credit card users?
And we so badly wanted to see Ashley Isham (well, his clothes primarily and also because he's a local boy made good in the global fashion industry) and if I had the money, I would go see Matthew Williamson... gah! And they'll be showcasing their Fall 2008 collections too! Interesting how this year's fest has a Brit flavor to it, and it does feel the organizers have looked to Central St. Martins as their inspiration in the sense that many shows are about student designers showcasing their, er, designs. Could be interesting, I suppose, but I think it'll be better if they had someone relatively well-known, not only within the fashion industry, but to the general public as well? I don't know...I'm just an aspiring consumer!
From Ashley Isham's Spring/Summer 2008:
I love love love Dsquared2 Fall 2008 collection... I would definitely wear them if I can afford them!
And wearing flared jeans take a little getting used to after nearly 3 years of wearing skinnies. Hmmm...looks like I need more waist-length tops for my new jeans so I wouldn't look out-of-proportioned.
Most people would know I'm a big fan of volume, especially when it comes to skirts. I love my full A-line skirts, bubble skirts, etc etc... and the 2008 Spring Couture collection has definitely fulfilled my puffball skirt/ dress fantasy! And once again John Galliano outdid himself...although this couture collection smacks eeriely of the previous spring RTW collection. But whatevs, I still love him.
Mimi Spencer astutely observed in a December 2 edition of The Observer that 2007 was the year of the handbag. The 'It' bag, more precisely. From Chanel to Balenciaga and Marc Jacobs, every designer out there touted their bag as the one to carry. Sure, if you had at least AUD5,000 to spare. And blame those Hollywood starlets for changing their bags like they change boyfriends. Boo. And now articles are rife in women's magazines about how the Gen Y demographic is shaping out to be society's biggest creditors- just so they could be as glamorous as celebrities. Sadly, this trend is here to stay. A tragedy, if you ask me.
As I turn the pages of Cosmopolitan and Cleo every month, I often wonder what it'd be like to even touch one of those bags. But my lust usually dissipated the moment I reached the endpages, it's not easy to justify spending such money on a bag when I already have student debts (let's just say it's coming to be a six-figure digit...argh!!!!)!!! Although I haven't stopped lusting after a Prada satchel/ messenger bag; not exactly 'It' but it is literally the perfect bag to tote around and at AUD650, it is definitely a steal compared to aforementioned It bags.
But I digress. In fashion terms, 2007 would be remembered as the year the Chloe or the Balenciaga Motorcycle thingy entered our everyday vernacular. And chain stores came to the rescue with similar designs churned out mere weeks after said bag was featured on the catwalk. Thank God for chain stores. You want something akin to Balenciaga? It's just AUD34.95 at Sportsgirl!
As the year comes to a close, the handbag no longer features prominently (although the whole dressing-like-celebrities trend will not budge). Phew. I don't think I can handle another picture of an 'It' bag. This is the best bit about fashion; it's so darned fickle. And 2008 will be the year of the shoe. Say hello to chunky platform heels and farewell, dainty stiletto heels.
